About This Strain
Apple Peelz is a cross between two of our team’s all-time favorite breeder cuts: the Sex Melon #3 (Ben’s favorite) and the Bad Apple #5 – Sugar Mill cut (Beth’s favorite). Both of these plants easily sit in everyone’s top 2-3 favorites at Dirty Bird. The 2025 Bad Apple breeding project that created the Apple Peelz has been one of the most epic breeding projects we’ve tested to-date, producing the most gorgeous, apple-dominant, trichome-laden flowers imaginable. Here, the Bad Apple reliably carried forward its funky, apple terpene profile like a champ, gaining a bit of sour and citrus from the tropical Sex Melon #3 which resulted in a bright and fresh green apple peel finish. The Apple Peelz progeny also retained the Bad Apple’s signature heavy frost, early finishing time, and striking purple and maroon coloration, deepened further by the Sex Melon #3’s striking, dark-purple flowers. These truly elite traits found in the Sugar Mill cut are then improved upon by the Sex Melon’s larger flower size and sturdier, leaner structure. The ripened, strawberry-shaped buds that are characteristic of the Bad Apple were nearly as plentiful in the Apple Peelz, but were much more well-developed throughout the entire plant canopy. Overall, we found the Apple Peelz to be less bushy and less foliated as a whole, allowing better light penetration and bigger flowers to develop deeper into the plant.
The Apple Peelz will finish around day 55 with select plants finishing even earlier. Expect dense flowers that are very easy to manicure due to their high calyx-to-leaf ratio, and expect loads of sugar, resin, terpenes, and color. Flower morphology will be a mashup of the Bad Apple’s strawberry-shaped buds, which can be observed on the inner plant and along the stems, and the Sex Melon’s longer, more conical flower-shape which dominates the cola morphology. While we haven’t tested this strain outdoors yet, we expect it will do well in difficult climates like our own here in Maine based on our experience with the genetics and the morphology of the plants. If that wasn’t enough, for all of you extractors out there: the Sex Melon #3 brought a favorable structure to the trichomes which leads us to believe this will be a great strain for extractions. We welcome your feedback and experience.
If I was a gambler, I would place my bets on the Apple Peelz going down as one of the greats. We plan to continue working this strain because we see a lot of potential here. If you’re looking for a stellar mother plant for boutique, eye-stopping flower, you shouldn’t have any trouble finding a keeper cut.
One final disclaimer: The Apple Peelz more than deserves a place in our Volume Series; however, we made a decision as a team to release it as an Alpha Series drop for two reasons: 1. When we tested these seeds we were cramped for space in our flower room, so we culled two plants that were exhibiting the arugula-cut morphology of its Brunch lineage. What we call the “arugula” foliar shape is not a bad thing at all; in fact, the Brunch “Arugula Cut” is one of the best cuts in our library. However, since we didn’t get to see this phenotype flower out to completion, we didn’t feel that we could release this strain as a Volume Series entry. 2. The silver lining is that now these seeds are more accessible to more growers and that excites us. This is definitely some great bang for your buck.
