Story time:
Many years agoโ€”back when regulations were far grayer than they are todayโ€”an operation found itself under scrutiny, with an inspection looming that could have meant the loss of a full, nearly finished crop.

Faced with the reality that those plants would likely be ordered destroyed, an unconventional solution emerged. As it turns out, certain rental trucks come equipped with translucent roofs. The plants were carefully loaded up and relocated to a remote area west of the city, where they remained for four days.

Thanks to that filtered natural light, the plants maintained a consistent 12/12 cycle and carried on as if nothing had changedโ€”completely unaware of their temporary change in scenery. Sometimes, survival comes down to timing, creativity, and a little bit of luck.

3 TIPS FOR NEW GROWERS

For Autoflowers, focus on protecting your roots!
We can do this in two ways:
i. Start the seed in the pot you intend to finish in.
Minimizing transplants will also minimize stress to the taproot.
ii. If you let your plants get rootbound, they will go into flower too early.
If youโ€™ve ever grown an auto and ended up with a little nug on a 8โ€ stalk, this is probably why.

When youโ€™re using liquid nutrients, donโ€™t overdo it on the additives and boosters.
There are a lot of factors that contribute to bud size, density, smell, and aroma. Using 8 different PK boosters with 5 different sweeteners almost always does more harm than good.

There are so many variables we can change from run to run.
When we change multiple variables on each run it can be almost impossible to figure out whatโ€™s actually moving the needle in your garden. My recommendation for new growers is to be consistent in your garden and if you are going to switch things up, do it one variable at a time. This way when you see a positive change, you know exactly what led to it.

FAVORITE BREEDING PROJECT

My favorite project was our most recent round of releases with pollen from
our Super Lemon Haze IBL #119. It represented a lot of hard work and pheno hunting on our end.
We took a robust, stable, high THC SLH and hit it against our favorite production cuts from our vertical business. I personally like really gassy varieties and making hash.
Our SLH IBL #119 crosses check those boxes for me.
*These include the following varieties
Dowtown Haze, Haze Burger, Lemdawg, Lemon Prime, Lemon Smuggler, Permanent Haze, Sour Berry Shake and Super Belts.

STORY FROM THE GARDEN

This is an easy one to answer! On our first round of seeds, our Associate Director of Cultivation and I were taking pheno notes on roughly 120 GMOZ x End Game #3 crosses in week 9 of flower. We were up on step ladders with lights on going from plant to plant to checking for terps, structure, herms, and overall structure. I can remember being at the top of the bench when one of us said โ€œthese are on another level!โ€ A few weeks later we were still struggling to come up with a name (surprisingly, this is one of the harder parts of releasing new varieties) when we just looked at each other and were like โ€œwhat about Another Level?โ€ Coincidentally, this is also one of my favorite varieties we have
released to date.

3 TIPS FOR NEW GROWERS

Don't plant anything until you have your room completely dialed in.
That means, Temp/RH/ 100% light tight, i.e., no light leaks/ fans/ light timer/exhaust, dehumidifier or humidifier depending on your climate. After all this is right its time to plant.

Patience.
Your plants wont grow faster by feeding stronger, in fact, if you over feed you can damage them.

Never interrupt the plants night cycle.
In flowering stage this can cause hermaphrodites or even switching back to the veg cycle.

Story From The Garden - Protect Your Eyes!
I like to use plant stakes instead of trellis netting, once I bent over to observe a plant closely and the stake hit right next to my eye, hard to believe, but I didn't see it coming! so from then on I put a cup, can, something on the top of the stake.

All About The Terps: Magnolia Motel
Magnolia Motel, back from testing, soon to be released along with 3 other GG4 crosses.

Washers
If you are looking for some โ€œwashersโ€ and you don't mind growing some non feminized seeds I would recommend any of the regular seeds we offer. they were specifically bred to be outstanding washers.
And if you want to get a quick heads up on which are male, which are female you can use this really simple , accurate sex testing facility--https://farmerfreeman.com/

3 TIPS FOR NEW GROWERS

Pick a growing style that works for you

The very first step new growers will take when beginning to grow autoflowers is choosing a growing style. There are many ways to successfully grow, and each system will have its own unique benefits and limitations. Prior to germinating their first seeds, new growers will want to choose whether they will be growing indoors, outdoors, or under mixed lighting. They will need to also select a growing medium, as well as a watering style and nutrient regiment. To ensure a successful grow, it is imperative that new growers research and select a system that works best within their own unique parameters and preferences.

Source genetics that both meet your preferences and work best in your chosen system

When selecting genetics, new growers will want to source varietals that first and foremost meet their individual preferences. This may include strain lineage, flavor profile, effect, THC%, etcโ€ฆ However itโ€™s also important to select varietals that work best within a chosen system. For example, certain strains will grow smaller, while others grow larger. Some are better for indoor growing while others work well for outdoor growing. Some strains are heavier feeders while others are lighter feeders. Once a system is chosen, new growers can select genetics that work best within them to strengthen the odds of having a successful first run.

Familiarize yourself with how to dial in environmental and lighting needs for your plants.

Autoflowers grow best within an optimal environmental range. The three pillars of this include temperature, humidity, and light. To dial in temperature and humidity, growers should familiarize themselves with Vapor Pressure Deficit (VPD). To understand how much light a plant will need within a day, growers should familiarize themselves with Daily Light Integral (DLI). Lastly, proper airflow is imperative to regulating the environment of a garden. It prevents unfavorable microclimates by moving new air in and taking old air out.

Subcool Seeds: Notes From the Breeder

Subcool shares 3 tips for new growers, their favorite breeding project & a story!

BREEDER OF THE WEEK NASC JOURNAL FEATURE

BREEDER INTRO:

Subcool Seeds is dedicated to continuing Subcoolโ€™s legacy, bringing his legendary strains to a new generation of growers.

3 TIPS FOR NEW GROWERS:

1. Start Simple & Learn the Plant

New growers often try to do too much too fast. Pick a solid medium, a proven feeding plan, and give the plant time to show you what it needs. Healthy cannabis communicates clearly โ€” leaf color, posture, and growth rate will tell you far more than any chart ever will.

โ€œStrong roots and steady growth matter more than chasing perfection.โ€

2. Donโ€™t Overlove Your Plants

Overwatering, overfeeding, and constant adjustments are some of the most common beginner mistakes. Cannabis prefers consistency. Let the medium dry properly between waterings, feed lightly, and avoid changing multiple variables at once.

โ€œLess intervention usually leads to better results.โ€

3. Genetics Matter โ€” Choose Wisely

Starting with quality genetics sets the foundation for success. Stable, well-worked lines are more forgiving, express better traits, and help new growers learn without unnecessary frustration. A great grow starts long before the seed ever hits the soil.

โ€œGood genetics wonโ€™t fix every mistake, but theyโ€™ll forgive many of them.โ€

FAVORITE BREEDING PROJECT

Thatโ€™s a tough one for us because the honest answer is we donโ€™t really have a single favorite.

Right now, our focus is on preserving and continuing the iconic cultivars Subcool spent his career creating and championing. Each project carries its own history, personality, and purpose. Some are about flavor, some about structure, some about balance and some are simply about keeping something special from being lost to time.

At the same time, weโ€™re thoughtfully bringing these genetics from 2012, into 2025, and beyond. Subโ€™s work was truly ahead of its time, so our goal isnโ€™t to reinvent it; itโ€™s to let it keep speaking in todayโ€™s market. That means carefully selecting for louder terpene expression, improved resin production, and extract-friendly traits, while maintaining the character, soul, and integrity that made these strains iconic in the first place.

If thereโ€™s a โ€œfavorite,โ€ itโ€™s the process itself: honoring the original work, selecting with intention, and ensuring these genetics remain available, true, and accessible for future growers. Every preservation project is a reminder that great genetics donโ€™t just happen; theyโ€™re built, protected, and passed forward.

Sub always said the plants would tell you what mattered and we listen. Our favorite projects are the ones that protect his legacy: preserving the cultivars he believed in, refining them with care, and carrying them forward without losing what made them special.

BREEDER OUTRO: A STORY, TO CLOSE

Itโ€™s honestly impossible to narrow it down to one story. Some of our favorite moments werenโ€™t about a single smoke sesh, but about the rooms we were lucky enough to be in. Weโ€™ve shared joints, laughs, and long conversations with some true legends of the plant; Subcool, Kyle Kushman, Mr. Soul, OG Raskal, Ross (one of the creators of GG4), and many others who helped shape modern cannabis. What stands out most isnโ€™t just who was there, but the energy: growers swapping stories, debating terps, laughing about failures, and passing knowledge the same way it always has; one bowl at a time. Those moments remind us that cannabis has always been about community, curiosity, and respect for the plant and the people who came before us. That spirit is something we try to carry into our garden every single day.

Breeder Spotlight: Lamb’s Breath Seeds

Interviewed Owner and Breeder, Jim Riddle

Offering hard-to-find Pure Legecy Landrace Genetics with our craft cannabis seeds: Lamb's Breath

Santaโ€™s Stash Flower!

Tell us a little about your history with cannabis:

I have a long and colorful history with cannabis! I grew up on a small farm in Iowa in the 1960โ€™s. We had woods and a pond, and I did a lot of fishing, hunting and camping. As a teenager, my campout buddies and I first smoked corn silks in our pipes, before we discovered ditch weed! As the saying goes, โ€œI owe a lot to Iowa pot!โ€ I learned that some plants had big, fat, sticky buds, and others were worthless. Fun times!

After graduating from Grinnell College in 1978, I moved to Minnesota and began growing and selling organic produce. In 1988, I ran for State Representative, because the long-time incumbent was otherwise unopposed. During the campaign, a disgruntled former brother-in-law got his 5-year-old daughter to tell the sheriff that she had seen marijuana at my place. They searched and found about 1.5 ounces of homegrown!

I held a press conference, and the room was packed! I told the media, โ€œNow I know what it takes to get your attention - Iโ€™ve been trying for months!โ€ I pled guilty and received a $13 fine. I stayed in the race and got 30% of the vote, which is about the same that the Democratic candidate got in the same district last fall, without getting busted!

Seriously, cannabis has been a part of my spiritual, medical and recreational life for over 50 years. Iโ€™ve been a home grower rather than a dealer. Iโ€™ve always preferred to be โ€œhighโ€ rather than โ€œstoned.โ€ I like to dance, hike, ski, garden, be active, and have magical encounters, hence I prefer uplifting, creative strains. And I love the biology of the plant! Iโ€™m continually amazed by how generous and adaptable cannabis is, in how it relates to humans.

How did you come to acquire such legendary genetics?

My wife and I were deeply involved in the organicย agricultureย sector for many years. We owned and operated an 11-acre organic produce farm, then an organic fruit farm (Blue Fruit Farm) in MN. We started a local farmers market, worked as organic inspectors for 20 years, and started the International Organic Inspectors Association, which we ran from our owner-built, off-grid home. I served on the USDA National Organic Standards Board from 2001-2006, and trained organic inspectors throughout the US, Canada, Latin America, Japan, Australia, Russia, and Iran, where I spoke in 2014 and 2015. From 2014-2018, we did 3 weeks of volunteer work per year with farmers and a government-based certification agencyย in Jamaica, helping set up organic production and certification systems.ย

During our time in Jamaica, we were given lots of great ganja, but I was always on the lookout for Lambโ€™s Breath (or Bread). I had heard about Bob Marleyโ€™s favorite, but never tried it. We had been living and working primarily in St. Thomas parish, on the east end of the island. In 2018, when our work was over, we took a bus from Kingston to Negril for some chill time.

In Negril, I met a Lambโ€™s Breath grower who offered to take us to the โ€œplantation.โ€ On Easter morning, he drove us way up in the hills, then we hiked further up, where he and his team were growing and came across about 4 acres of ganja. In a corner of the field, they kept a few male plants for breeding. I bought some seeds from them. I brought them home and grew a few at our farm in MN for personal use. I found the Lambโ€™s Breath strain lived up to the hype โ€“ tall vigorous sativas, with sweet sticky buds and creative, energizing, euphoric effects. Just what I was looking for!

What led you to become a breeder?

In 2020, we retired from farming in MN and bought a lake house in New England to be closer to family. I had 6 original Lambโ€™s Breath seeds left and wanted to propagate them. Vermont had just legalized homegrown, so I contacted an organic CBD grower, and he agreed to grow out my seeds in an isolated location.ย

Of the 6 seeds, 4 were male and 2 female. One of those females was a potent beauty that tested 16.5% THC, pretty good for a landrace. Seeds from that plant have been the basis of my Legend, Respect, Irie Select and Santaโ€™s Stash lines. (The other plant tested 3.5% THC and 3.5% CBD, and I call her Balance. This year, Iโ€™m running a breeding trial with those seeds to try to come up with a stable 10:10 ratio. Stay tuned.)

When I learned in 2022 that the DEA officially ruled that all cannabis seeds (and clones/seedlings) are โ€œhempโ€ because they contain less than 0.3% THC, I decided to get a USDA hemp license, register with the Farm Service Agency as a hemp seed grower, and get into breeding.

(Unlike some breeders, I am not in the cannabis business. I compost all THC-containing plant materials, except for samples retained for testing and QA purposes.)

As a breeder, I decided to focus solely on the Lambโ€™s Breath strain, using selective line breeding, and not introduce any foreign genetics or autoflower traits. I select for vigor, potency, lively and diverse terpenes, and strong sativa traits (long nodes, narrow leaves, reddish stems and pistils, large, sweet, sticky flowers).

In my breeding program, I only move the โ€œbest of the bestโ€ forward, based on lab test results, my observations and rigorous culling. Using indoor and outdoor grows, I am now in the seventh generation of line breeding and getting cannabinoid results that average around 25%, with lively terpene profiles, from extremely vigorous plants which offer energizing, creative and euphoric effects.

If you had any advice to share with a grower, what would that be?

I have several pieces of advice:

  1. Donโ€™t overwater! If you are growing in soil, get a soil moisture meter and use it!
  2. Try regular M/F seeds. Feminized seeds are fine, but something is lost when the Y chromosome is removed from the genome. More research is needed, but I suspect that the Y chromosome is related to plant vigor and terpene levels, at least. Read my blog - โ€œXY Weed โ€“ In Praise of Regular Cannabis Seeds.โ€ Plus, using regular seeds allows you to try your hand at plant breeding, if youโ€™d like, without using chemicals to โ€œreverseโ€ females so that they produce XX pollen. Itโ€™s empowering. Itโ€™s fun!
  3. Itโ€™s a myth that having seeds ruins your weed. Itโ€™s a hassle to clean, but Iโ€™ve had plenty of seeded weed that is highly potent, with test results to back it up.
  4. And have fun! Remember, thereโ€™s a reason why cannabis is called โ€œweed!โ€ Let the plants express themselves!

What do you love most about your job?

I love spending time with my plants, from cleaning and selecting seeds to tending my plants as they grow. I love selecting which plants to move forward. I love smelling and handling the plants as they mature. I love how many bees work my male plants! I love learning how to select the best males, based on lineage, vigor, color, form, sativa traits, number and size of pollen flowers, and response to pruning and training. (This year, I plan on sending some male plant samples for lab analysis of cannabinoid and terpene levels to help inform my breeding selections.)) I love making cannabis compost!

I also love hearing from customers, who often send me pictures and stories of their Lambโ€™s Breath plants! I enjoy receiving feedback from people who appreciate and respect what Iโ€™m doing, using old-fashioned selective breeding of male and female plants to keep this classic strain alive.
