Strawberry Cyanide Auto: A Throwback to the Old School Sour Diesel

Strawberry Cyanide Auto is the pungent, Strawberry Diesel-forward cross of the Bruce Banner and Dirty Birdโ€™s own, Sour Gorilla Auto. In tracing these genetics back, youโ€™ll find that the aforementioned mother and the father have strong sour diesel and strawberry diesel lineages in common. This explains why the Strawberry Cyanide Auto felt so timeless when we first tested the genetics in early 2026. The look and smell brought us back to the early 2010โ€™s when medical cannabis was just gaining steam here in Maine. The east coast Sour Diesel genetics dominating the genome back then were truly unforgettable and, until this point, equally elusive. Anyone who has worked closely with us knows weโ€™ve been hunting for an incredible Sour Diesel ever since. While we have yet to find it in the photoperiod gene pool, this cross has unexpectedly delivered us a win.

The Strawberry Cyanide F1 Auto is a hybrid cross that exhibits great uniformity and vigor, and incredible terpenes. In the first 5-6 weeks of its life, it may appear moderately stretchy due to its vertically-oriented structure, but by the end of week 7 it kicks into high gear and begins filling out its gorgeous, multi-toned flowers. By harvest, most of the cohort will have calyxes and fan leaves flecked with maroon and dark purples. Flower morphology is long and conical with minimal leaf, making this strain easy to manicure and process. Some plants will fill out their length better than others, with the shorter, tighter phenos being the keepers we chose to move the line forward to the upcoming F2 generation.

Terpenes are unwavering in their potency, but diverge slightly between sour petroleum and strawberry sandalwood. Bright sour, chem, and gas is definitely the dominant profile, and a token example of the terp profile that gave the legendary Sour Diesel its name. The strawberry comes in as a strong second adding complexity and flavor to an already bright, intriguing palate. About 15% of plants were strawberry-dominant with sour/chem undertones.

Expect plants to finish between 65-75 days. When scoped at day 65, we observed amber coloring in approximately 5% of trichomes, making it an early finishing autoflower in our indoor grow. Trichome stalks were tall and copious with medium, average sized heads. Flowers were incredibly greasy. In breeding this line forward, we noted that the plants remained very healthy when pushed past their prime into 80-90 day territory, indicative of healthy, stable genetics that are unlikely to herm, even in adverse environments. Plants will gain deeper color the further you push them.

PVI: Low-moderate โ€“ Strawberry Cyanide is a plant that grows vertically with a strong central cola, moderate stretch, and moderate internodal spacing. Great for sea of green or scrog. About 25% of plants will be shorter with tighter internodal spacing and stacking, but these will otherwise resemble the taller, dominant phenotype. Flowers are tall and conical with a high calyx-to-leaf ratio making them easy to process. Coloring will range from a vibrant green to a dark green with maroon and purple flecks of color in the fan leaves and calyxes.

Yield: Average to high

Flowering Time: 65-75 days

Terpenes: Our favorite kind of gas, very reminiscent of the classic Sour Diesel! Bright Sour/Chem/Petroleum; Strawberry; Undertones of Pine and Sandalwood.

Smoke Report: Mint Lemonade Auto by Dirty Bird Genetics

For this round, we tried Mint Lemonade Auto, a new addition to the Alpha Series by Dirty Bird Genetics. She is a cross of Purple Lemonade Auto x Mint Jelly Auto. Read on to learn about our experiences.

Mint Lemonade is an afternoon delight for me. This was an excellent post-work, pre-dinner strain. It helped me decompress after a long day, but kept me functional to tackle some tasks that were more lax. It's a great option for fans of calming, balanced strains. It also jump started my appetite right before dinner, and as many of you can imagine, it made the meal taste twice as good. Soreness in my feet became a temporary after-thought. The taste and smell offered a pretty even lemon and herbal blend, with a few random pops of zestiness. I appreciate this combination of terps a lot!

- Crystal

I really loved this strain! I instantly felt super chill and mellow when I smoked Mint Lemonade. The buds are stunning with flecks of purple throughout. It ground up beautifully and smoked very smoothly. The smell and taste is sweet and has some fruity vibes that are present but not overpowering. I would recommend this strain in the evening to unwind or enjoy it on a rainy day when you have nothing to do except watch tv and take a nap. It definitely makes you super relaxed. Have snacks ready of course!

And As Always, Happy Growing!

Tastebudz Shares Grow Tips & More!

Tastebudz New Drop June 2026
Tastebudz Freebies

3 Tips For New Growers

Keep things simple.
Most mistakes happen when you overwater, overfeed, or constantly tweak your setup. Let the plant do its thing, check on it daily, and give it time to respond before making changes.

Donโ€™t harvest by the calendar alone.
Flowering times are a great general guide, but every setup and outdoor climate is slightly different. Instead of chopping strictly because a set number of weeks have passed, get a cheap jeweller's loupe and check the trichomes.

Be patient with drying and curing.
Itโ€™s tempting to rush right after harvest, but if you don't give your flowers a proper slow dry and cure, you'll burn off the terpenes and flavour you just spent months working for.

Favorite Breeding Project

My personal favorite projects (being a Halloween baby) have been our limited Halloween drops like Cereal Killer and Scream Cheese. We really enjoy doing these limited runs because they let us step away from our main catalogue of sweet, dessert-heavy strains and lean into potent cheese, and old-school, nostalgic terps, with the one-off dark aesthetics to match.

Story From The Garden

When we were finalizing our Cookie Dawg line, we were torn between two phenos: one with a more peppery kush gas, and another with a peanut-butter-dough smell. Weโ€™d been debating over which one to keep, and during an evening smoke sesh, we joked out loud that we needed a sign from the universe. Moments after, our cocker spaniel trotted in, ignored the gassy jar, shoved his nose in the peanut-butter pheno, and sat down next to it wagging his tail like he wanted a biscuit. We went with that exact pheno, and putting his photo on the sticker was a no-brainer since he basically made the final decision for us.

Strain Recommendations & Genetic Highlights

For outdoor, I would recommend: Blueberry Octane Auto (NEW โ€” Champagne Octane ร— Blueberry Kush Auto). Built for unpredictable weather, it inherits an old-school Blueberry structure with thick foliage that handles humidity and temperature swings. It finishes fast in 8 to 9 weeks to beat late-season mould, while its heavy myrcene and pinene terps naturally deter garden pests.

For beginners, weโ€™d recommend: Lemon Runtz Auto (NEW โ€” Lemon Venom ร— Black Runtz Auto). It features a robust, forgiving structure that easily handles nutrient bumps without stressing out. As a fast 8-to-9 week auto requiring zero light-cycle management, it gives newcomers an easy, low-maintenance run while stacking loud, sugary lemon buds.

For flowering time under 8 weeks, weโ€™d recommend: Hash Cake Fem (Critical ร— Wedding Cake). This photoperiod powers through a fast 6-to-8 week bloom cycle. It inherits famous Wedding Cake performanceโ€”packing on dense, rock-hard buds and heavy frostโ€”while layering rich vanilla dough with earthy pine and deep kush notes for a great sweet-and-savoury contrast.

Gorilla Gas Auto (Chemdawg ร— GSC ร— GG4 Auto) was selected for its naturally resilient genetic profile. Developed for durability, it grows thick branching to support heavy flowers and features a high bud-to-leaf ratio for quick trimming. Loaded with caryophyllene and limonene, it has strong natural defences against environmental stress while pumping out peppery lemon-diesel gas.

Cookie Dawg (Peanut Butter Cookies ร— Kosher Dawg) was selected for high yield thanks to its rapid growth and heavy flower stacking. Strong lateral branches hold serious weight, making it a reliable pick for big harvests paired with nutty peanut butter and kush fuel.

Best high-THC choice would be: Back to the Future Fem (Original Glue ร— Alien Tahoe OG). It sits at a heavy 30% THC on the spec sheet, but itโ€™s the synergy with the terpenes that makes it hit so hard. Earthy myrcene and peppery caryophyllene drive the entourage effect, delivering a deep body stone perfect for physical pain relief, muscle aches, and evening relaxation.

Sour Sherb Pop Fem (NEW โ€” Pink Apple Soda ร— Sour Sherbet) is our top terpene-heavy choice for its loud, punchy flavour. It mixes crisp apple soda with sharp sour sherbet, giving you an intense, tangy, and refreshing sweet-and-sour profile that coats the mouth.

For extraction, weโ€™d recommend: Rainbow Grease Fem (NEW โ€” RS11 ร— Grease Monkey). Grease Monkey is famous for dumping greasy resin heads. Crossed with the sweet tropical fruit of RS11, this cross is a dream for washing and extraction, delivering great yields and loud candy terps.

HAPPY GROWING!

Supernatural Seeds Shares Grow Tips & More!

3 Tips For New Growers

Feed the soil. By using natural compost and encouraging beneficial microbes, the soil ecosystem does all the heavy lifting for youโ€”breaking down nutrients and feeding the plant exactly what it needs naturally.

Keep it simple and sustainable. You can reduce, reuse, and recycle so many everyday things for your garden, like making your own compost, collecting rainwater, and growing companion plants. Relying on beneficial bugs (and their nutrient-rich poo!) or brewing DIY organic boosters like sprout tea is way more cost-effective, eco-friendly, and keeps your grow 100% natural.

Enjoy the process and learn from your plant. The most common beginner mistake is stressing out and trying to micromanage everything. Take your time checking in on your garden every dayโ€”observe how it changes, and don't be afraid to just slow down. Growing for the first time should be an enjoyable, relaxing experience and a fun learning process.

Favorite Breeding Project

Our favorite breeding projects are probably the ones where we get to work together across Supernatural Seeds and Tastebudz Genetics. Because weโ€™re married, it makes the whole process feel a bit more personal. We both bring different ideas to the table. A good example is two new strains we're excited to release: Tropical UFOG and Purple Mooncake.

Smoke Story

The name Supernatural Seeds actually came about during an evening in our campervan on a road trip around Wales. We wanted our brand to remind people that cannabis is pure nature. Just like the beneficial mushrooms and ancient plant medicines humans have used for thousands of years, it shouldn't be restricted or controlledโ€”it should be recognized for the super natural being it is (like all of us) โ€” so the name Supernatural just clicked. We also love the fun paranormal double meaning, which connects to all our late-night chats about UFOs, space, and the unknown... where we concoct our artwork and strain names.

Alien Soda Auto Cannabis Seeds by Supernatural Seeds

Strain Recommendations & Genetic Highlights

For outdoor, I would recommend: Galactic Grape Auto, because autos are a practical choice for shorter or unpredictable seasons, finishing quicker while still bringing that sweet, fruity profile.

For beginners, weโ€™d recommend: Sour Orange. Itโ€™s a great introduction to feminized strains, with bold citrus, clementine, sherbet, and tangie genetics.

For flowering time under 8 weeks, weโ€™d recommend: Champagne Octane photoperiod, which powers through a fast 7 to 8 week bloom cycle.

Glookie Monster was selected for its naturally resilient genetic profile. From the O.G. Kush side, it carries a rich terpene background of caryophyllene and limonene, both associated with strong aromatic expression and natural plant defence traits. The Gorilla Glue influence adds further resilience through thick branching, strong hybrid vigour, heavy resin potential, and a favourable calyx-to-leaf ratio.

Apple Tart was selected for high yield thanks to its sativa-leaning structure, which supports a rapid growth spurt during early flower and helps maximise canopy coverage. This vigorous stretch allows the plant to develop strong branching and heavy, stacked colas, making it a standout choice for collectors looking for high-yielding genetics.

Best high-THC choice would be: Black Cherry Crush for its potent genetic profile and rich, resin-heavy expression, driven by a powerful indica-dominant lineage and a bold cherry terpene profile.

Permanent Funk is our top terpene-heavy choice for its loud, complex flavour profileโ€”blending caryophyllene from the sweet sherb gas of Permanent Marker with myrcene from the creamy blue cheese funk of Blue Fondue.

For extraction, weโ€™d recommend: Blue Fondue, because its Blue Cheese ร— Gorilla Glue genetics are known for heavy resin production, delivering a strong terpene profile of cheese, berry, and earthy gas.

The El Krem Peaches Collection

Moroccan Peaches and the Rise of the Sativa Hash
Plant, story provided by Purple City Genetics

Hash has lived in a narrow lane for a long time.
Heavy. Sedative. Indica-dominant.
The plants that wash well are almost always the ones that put you down. Dense resin,
strong returns, predictable results.
And for years, that tradeoff was accepted.
If you wanted yield, you gave up energy.
If you wanted lift, you gave up washability.
Two different worlds.

The Constraint

Sativa plants have always carried some of the most compelling terpene profiles in
cannabis. Citrus, tropical fruit, bright, volatile expressions that jump out of the jar.
They also tend to fail where hash begins.
Loose trichome structure. Lower return. Poor mechanical separation.
So they get pushed out of the category.
Distillate inputs. Flavor contributors. Not centerpiece hash.
Meanwhile, the hash world optimized around what worked.
The result: technically strong, but creatively limited.

El Krem: A Different Objective

El Krem was built to break that constraint. Not by chasing THC.
Not by chasing yield alone.
By selecting for expression first.
The goal was to create plants that could sit on a table with dozens of jars and still stand
out. Lime, orange, peach. Layered terpene profiles that donโ€™t flatten out after extraction.
At the same time, every cultivar had to function in the real world.
Flower or hash.
Jar or wash.
Because growers donโ€™t get to specialize anymore.
They need optionality.
This is what defines the El Krem line: dual-use genetics built for both flavor and function

Moroccan Peaches

Moroccan Peaches didnโ€™t arrive quietly.
From the start, it stood out for combining two traits that rarely coexist:
Effect and washability.
A sativa-leaning hybrid with loud lemon, orange, and peach terpenes. Bright,
expressive, immediately recognizable.
But what made it different wasnโ€™t just the flavor.
It was how that flavor behaved.
Across crosses, peach showed up consistently. It held its signal. It carried through
different pairings without collapsing into sameness.
More importantly, it didnโ€™t flatten everything around it.
It organized it.
Part of what makes that possible is structural. The peach-leaning expressions weโ€™ve
selected tend to carry dense, uniform resin heads and a terpene profile that reads
clearly even after processing. That combination matters. It means the signal doesnโ€™t just. of stability is present, it stops behaving like a note and starts behaving like a framework.
Thatโ€™s when you can actually build around it.
Peach became a baseline strong enough to pressure-test everything it touched. Traits
paired with it had to hold their ground. The ones that did started to define the edges of
the expression: citrus on one side, gas on another, candy and sour filling in between.
The ones that didnโ€™t got absorbed.
Thatโ€™s how the range sharpens instead of getting muddy.
Underneath that, structure.
Resin that actually separates.
Trichomes that hold.
A plant that returns when you wash it.
That alone would have made it notable.
The effect made it different.
Upward. Energetic. Engaging.
Not the slow descent most hash delivers.
That combination changed how people thought about what hash could be.

Why It Stuck

Most hype strains fade.
Moroccan Peaches didnโ€™t.
Because it solved a real problem.
It gave extractors something new to work with.
It gave smokers a different kind of experience.
It gave growers a plant that could perform in both lanes.
Thatโ€™s rare.
And when it shows up, you build around it.

The 2026 El Krem Peaches Collection

For 2026, Moroccan Peaches became a foundation.
Not a single release. A breeding block.
The goal was to expand its core traits across a wider spectrum without losing what
made it work.
Each cross explores a different edge of the same structure:
โ— Fez: peach nectarine layered with incense and citrus depth
โ— Habibi: peach and Z-driven structure with strong bag appeal
โ— Moroccan Zowah: extraction-forward with candy and sour gas undertones
โ— Saffron: shorter cycle while holding the peach-forward identity
โ— Cheri Granada: full-spectrum fruit expression with floral and wood notes
Different directions.
Same backbone.

Beyond the Pack

Seedlings and clone releases pushed the work further.
Different pairings. Different environments. Different outcomes.
Some leaned tropical.
Some leaned gas.
Some sharpened citrus.
Others pulled deeper into kush structure.
Not every expression needs to last.
But every expression adds resolution.
This is the same philosophy behind the seedling program: early looks into where the
line is going, not just finished products

The Shift

El Krem represents a change in how hash is evaluated. From yield to experience.
From output to expression.
Moroccan Peaches sits at the center of that shift.
Not because itโ€™s louder.
Because it expands the range without losing structure.

The Point

Cannabis isnโ€™t supposed to exist in one lane.
Not in flower.
Not in hash.
Not in experience.
El Krem is built to preserve that range on the extraction side of the plant.
Because once you start narrowing what works, you donโ€™t just lose options.
You lose entire categories of experience.

Easy Home Growerโ€™s Guide for Feminized Autoflowering Cannabis Seeds

Direct sow seeds into the pot at a depth of ยผโ€ that the plant will finish its life cycle in.  No need to transplant as shock during this phase can be detrimental to plant growth.  Although transplanting can occur with precision .

28-35 days will be Veg and 30-40 days will be Flower.   Feed your plants the nutrient mixtures that are appropriate for the stage of growth.

You can pinch/top your plant right before it initiates flowering if you would like a more even canopy and desire multiple kolas at the top of the plant.  Only top/pinch 1-2x and DO NOT top/pinch after flowering phase has begun

Use high end light fixtures, either HPS or LED with a PPFD between 650-1000 over the entire canopy for best results.

Trellis your plants with netting or bamboo stakes for best results with even ripening.  Remember that plants that are flopped over will not ripen as well as plants standing tall and erect.

Harvest when >50% of trichomes are milky white.  Use our flowering times as guides.

Simple Beginners Growers Guide for Feminized Photoperiod Marijuana Seeds

Seeds can be sown directly into pots or placed in a soil plug and transplanted.

Plants can be pheno hunted and cloned when a unique โ€œwinnerโ€ is found.

Light cycles should be at 18/6 for Veg and 12/12 for Flower

Use high end fixtures, either HPS or LED with a PPFD between 650-1000 over the entire canopy for best results.

Indoor flowering times are between 63-75 days depending on strain

James Loud Genetics Breeder Spotlight

James Loud Genetics shares 3 tips for new growers and their top recommendations!
Don't miss out on all the great deals from James Loud Genetics for Breeder of the Week!

3 Tips For New Growers

Start small and stay consistent
Fewer plants mean less complexity and faster learning. Start with four to six plants max, and grow the same cross rather than mixing multiple varieties. This allows you to identify patterns in growth, nutrition, and structure, while also teaching you how individual plants express differently, even among sisters.

Genetics set the ceiling
Start with proven, stable cultivars. Varieties with Blue Dream, LCG, Runtz, or Tangie lineage tend to be more forgiving and easier to manage, which builds confidence early. More finicky lines like OG Kush or Cookies can require multiple cycles to dial in and often frustrate beginners. Set yourself up for early success.

Follow one system and track everything
Do not combine multiple sources of advice. Pick one approach and follow it precisely. Document your full process, and when making adjustments, change only one variable at a time. Track yield and quality, with quality as the primary metric. Real skill comes from repetition and problem solving over time, not guessing. Everyone starts somewhere, consistency is what separates average from exceptional.

Favorite Breeding Project

My favorite breeding work right now is my upcoming 420 release built around the Double Lemon Cherry crosses, along with several Runtz-based projects. What excites me about this work is the level of diversity I brought into it. I am incorporating a wide range of unique cultivars, including Dream Candy, RBK OG Kush, GMO, NL5 Haze, 24k, Chem91, Oregon Blueberry, and Bananaconda, to create new expressions of what is popular right now while still pushing things forward.

What makes this project stand out for me is not just the genetics, but the process. It is the first full run I have completed in Rockwool, where I was able to precisely steer the crop using Grodanโ€™s Gro-Sense system. That level of control gave me a much deeper understanding of irrigation strategy, VPD, and dew point, and how those variables directly influence plant performance and final expression.

James Loud Genetics > James Runtz

Story From The Garden

Iโ€™ve been doing this long enough to remember when charcoal filters werenโ€™t standard. Back in 1997 to 1998, we were building our own with five gallon buckets and loose carbon.

The first run I ever did of Oregon Blueberry with those homemade filters barely smelled. I thought we had it figured out. Then came the next run, a Chemdog variety in my garage under six lights. The smell was overwhelming, completely uncontrollable. Neighbors over 200 feet away were convinced there was a skunk loose in the neighborhood. They kept asking me and my wife if we had seen it. We told them yes, of course.

We tried everything to manage it. Strong smelling companion plants, orange oil sprays, anything we could think of. Nothing worked. The plant just overpowered it all. Somehow, we got lucky and avoided any real issues, but at that time people were getting serious time for far less.

We were among the early wave of people with medical cards in California, but back then that card was not something you could rely on to protect you. You had to be sharp, resourceful, and a little lucky. That run taught me quickly that some varieties donโ€™t just grow, they announce themselves whether you are ready or not.

BEST OUTDOOR STRAINS 2026

This year NASC set out to curate a line of genetics that commercial farmers and outdoor home growers could rely on for uniformity, resilience, quality and performance. We are asked for outdoor recommendations every day, and because we live in one of the harshest climates in the US for growing, we know the struggle it can be to find reliable genetics. The NASC Commercial Cultivars series was sourced from US breeders and tested and bred on a commercial scale to meet the needs of the home grower and the commercial grower alike. Smoke Report: Black Goliath Auto by Dirty Bird Genetics

Black Goliath Alpha Series Cannabis Seeds by Dirty Bird Genetics

We are very excited for to share our thoughts on this limited drop by Dirty Bird Genetics. If you were lucky enough to get a pack of Black Goliath Auto, this is what you can expect after you grow her. Black Goliath Auto is (Anvil F7 X Sour Gorilla (Sour Apple X Strawberry Gorilla)). Read on to learn about our experiences.

The first thing I noticed was the bag appeal. These were chunky and dense nugs with an overall tint of purple. The orange hairs were extremely prominent. The nose on this one was a combination of sweet florals and a muskiness. The sweetness comes across more than the musk on the exhale, making it smooth and pleasant overall. It comes with a pretty balanced effect. I felt uplifted and like I could function, but not with anything requiring deep concentration or thought. It is so calming and without that side of sleepiness. She can help me tackle Sunday chores, but she definitely deserves to be smoked in nature or around fun people.
- Crystal

Black Goliath Alpha Series Cannabis Seeds by Dirty Bird Genetics

This strain is a treat! The first ever autoflower by Dirty Bird Genetics does not disappoint. Black Goliath's buds are super dark purple and when I ground it up it looked like black crystals in the bowl. It smells sweet and peppery. I love a good indica, and this strain (Anvil F7 x Sour Gorilla) is definitely a favorite. It made me feel totally calm, my brain and body were super relaxed without being too sleepy. I'm really lucky I got to try this one as it is super exclusive and sold out already. If you missed it l am truly sorry! Better luck next time!

And As Always, Happy Growing!

Cannabis Types Explained: Fem vs Reg / Photo vs Auto by Ben Morris

Regular vs Feminized (Reg vs Fem)

Reg or regular seed is seed produced with a natural male pollen donor and a natural female cannabis plant. Fem or Feminized seed is produced with a female pollen donor and a natural female cannabis plant.

Regular seed can produce male (XY) and female (XX) plants. Either laboratory testing or growing some seeds out and sexing them can help you identify if they are male or female. Males obviously make pollen which, when hitting a stigma, traveling through the style then into the ovary on a female plant, will cause the females to create seed. This can easily ruin a crop if a grower is going for seedless flower which makes identifying plant sex very important early in the growing process.

There is nothing wrong with regular seeds. They can still produce amazing plants as long as theyโ€™re tended to appropriately just like with plants from feminized seeds. The main difference is knowing youโ€™ll have to pop more seeds to account for any males you may have to get rid of if youโ€™re going for seedless flower. Many people prefer regular seeds over feminized seeds for many reasons. One such reason is to breed their own strains and to create their own seed for next yearโ€™s grow.

Feminized seeds produce 99.9% female seeds due to the pollen donor being female (XX). Since a female in these instances is made to create pollen there is no โ€˜Yโ€™ chromosome to pass along thus no natural males should be able to form from the seeds produced. This results in almost all the seeds from a feminized pollen donor (XX) and a natural female cannabis plant (XX) being female. This can save much time by cutting out the need to sex plants when planning for your particular grow space and harvest goals. Feminized seeds are preferred by many people as well for many reasons. One big reason being the time and money saved on growing out many possible males and sexing or testing them before discarding them.

Both regular and feminized seed can lead to plants that show hermaphroditism (male and female sex organs/ anthers and pistils on the same plant) if not cared for properly or if poor parental choices were made by the breeder during seed creation. It is important to regularly check on your plants to monitor for unwanted anthers and remove them or the entire plant before they pollinate the other females in the grow space.

Regular SeedFeminized Seed
50% chance of male or female plant

Can exhibit hermaphroditism

Can produce amazing plants with high yields
99.9% Chance of female plant

Can exhibit hermaphroditism

Can produce amazing plants with high yields

Photoperiod vs AutoFlower (Photo vs Auto)

Photoperiod plants, or โ€œPhotos,โ€ are cannabis plants that require a change in the amount of light they receive to trigger flowering. Generally 12 hours of light followed by 12 hours of darkness will prompt photoperiod plants to create their sex organs (pistils/buds for female plants and anthers for male plants) and grow their flowers. This is often called โ€œ12/12โ€ or โ€œ12/12 lighting.โ€

Auto-flowering plants do not require a change in light schedule to begin flowering and will do so after a certain number of days after being potted. This is due to the underlying genetics in auto-flower varieties that allow them to trigger flowering without any change in light schedule required. Auto-flower plants are not good candidates for cloning as they have a short window of time in vegetative growth before they start flowering out. This means any cuts taken from the โ€˜motherโ€™ will still flower around the same time the mother would, making them poor choices for mother plants.

Some breeders have labeled particular strains as โ€œFastโ€ or โ€˜Fast Flower.โ€ This generally means the plant is still a photoperiod plant and will require a change in the amount of light/darkness it received to trigger flowering but that it will complete its flowering period much sooner than the average photoperiod plant.

PhotoperiodAuto-Flower
Requires change in light schedule to trigger flowering

Can be feminized or regular seed

Handles appropriate transplanting well.

Tolerance varies by strain

Good for cloning
Flowering triggered after a certain number of days regardless of light schedule

Can be feminized or regular seed

Does not handle transplanting very well

Bad for cloning

Regular and Feminized seeds can be either photoperiod or auto-flowering varieties

Examples:

A plant grown from a regular auto-flower seed would have a 50% chance of being male or female and would start flowering at a certain time after planting regardless of the amount of light it received.

A plant grown from a feminized auto-flower seed would have a 99.9% chance of being female and would start flowering at a certain time after planting regardless of the amount of light it received.

A plant grown from a regular photoperiod seed would have a 50% chance of being male or female and would require a change in the amount of light it receives to trigger flowering. (12 hrs light/12 hrs dark)

A plant grown from a feminized photoperiod seed would have a 99.9% chance of being female and would require a change in the amount of light it receives to trigger flowering (12 hrs light/12 hrs dark)

Annaboto Harvest: Alchemist’s Apprentice by Night Owl Seeds

Do you want to grow cannabis in a simple and convenient way? The Annaboto growing system will provide you with an experience that is fun and fairly hands-off. Crystal discusses her second harvest with the Annaboto.

Back in November of 2025, I started my second grow journey with the Annaboto grow system. I still heavily recommend the Annaboto as an option for new growers or anyone that feels like they are too busy to grow. You can learn more about my experience with the process of setting up and using this machine here.

The strain I chose for this grow was Alchemist's Apprentice by Night Owl Seeds. She is made up of a cross between Wizardโ€™s Apprentice *Foxy Purps* x Chem 91 F4 Auto. From germination to harvest, she grew like a champ. The process was smooth and nothing challenging arose during her lifespan.

Below, there are three pictures that show the first three weeks of growth. She started out as a healthy seedling and seemed to grow fairly rapidly into vegetation.

The next three images below are showing where she stands at week 5 and week 6. Some of her leaves have gotten really big. During week 6, I topped the plant in hopes that she would grow a little more outward and produce more flower. I cut the stem between the fifth and sixth nodes. At this point, she was a luscious green color and very healthy.

The first sign of the flowering stage occurred during week 8. She really opened up and topping definitely created more bud sites. I started to defoliate here and there to create more open space for the light to hit the buds, especially the ones toward the bottom of the plant.

Harvest happened during week 14. I was very pleased with the results as the buds looked extremely chunky and coated in white. She had decent internodal spacing and was somewhat compact, only being about a foot and a half tall. She just finished drying and I will be trimming her soon, followed by letting her cure for a few weeks. I am very excited to smoke this one!

This concludes my second grow journey with the Annaboto. It's reputation for being convenient and easy to use definitely remains.

The Making of the Black Goliath Auto

Dirty Bird Genetics Celebrates the Launch of their first Autoflower

By: Beth Mathieu, owner of Dirty Bird Genetics

Dirty Bird Genetics Alpha Series - Black Goliath Auto Fem is available Friday, February 13th! This release is limited to 100 packs so don't miss out!

Black Goliath Alpha Series Cannabis Seeds by Dirty Bird Genetics

Dirty Birdโ€™s release of the Black Goliath Auto marks a very special occasion for our team as the proud launch of our first-ever autoflower strain. At the time of this drop (Feb 2026), our autoflower program is 18 months in the making, and itโ€™s still in its infancy all things considered. We anticipated that we would work most strains for several generations before achieving the stability we were looking for in order to release them. But out of the 100 auto breeding projects weโ€™ve done over the past 18 months at Dirty Bird, the Black Goliath Auto (Anvil F7 x Sour Gorilla) genetics stood out enough to become not just a tester drop, but an elevated Alpha Series drop. In deciding to release these, we tested three cohorts of the F1 seeds, and we were able to observe about 75 plants total. We wanted to be sure of these genetics before letting them out into the wild, and at this time, we feel the strain has more than proven itself.ย

The Black Goliath is one of those strains that will stand out in any garden due to its dark purple flower (the photos do not do it justice), incredible, dense yields, and a terpene profile that ranges from pine to skunk to cherry chapstick. For an F1, the stability and homogeneity of the Black Goliath is quite remarkable. We credit this, in large part, to the Anvil F7 powerhouse mother we selected to breed with (a heartfelt shout out to Gnome!). The Anvil F7, a wildly stable IBL by all accounts, is your classic indica: itโ€™s short and stout with a strong central cola, solid purple flower, and bright green foliage. The Anvil definitely brought its A-game to this cross, lending to the low PVI, the dark purple (almost black) flowers, the high density, above-average yields, and the elongated central cola.ย

The Sour Gorilla, on the other hand, brought the sugar and the terps to the cross, and it helped stretch out the otherwise super-compact structure of the Anvil. The Sour Gorilla mother that we used in this creation is our own cross of Humboldtโ€™s Sour Apple Auto x Fastbudโ€™s Strawberry Gorilla Auto. The Sour Gorilla Auto is wonderfully sugary and appley, and it grows like a typical hybrid of medium height and density.ย

Sour Gorilla Auto (Sour Apple x Strawberry Gorilla) by Dirty Bird Genetics

Combined, the Black Goliathโ€™s Anvil F7 x Sour Gorilla lineage came together wonderfully. In looking at the pictures below, youโ€™ll see that this is strain with very strong central colas. In the spirit of experimentation, we topped 10 plants just to see, but the untopped plants definitely outshined them. I will note that we test all of our autos exclusively in three gallon pots, and I do expect that in a larger pot size, this strain would have done very well topped because the plants do create a very even canopy. Play around with topping if youโ€™re into that, and if youโ€™re not, this is going to be a great set-it-and-forget-it morphology.

Overall, we are really proud of this creation and excited for you to grow it at home and give us your feedback. These seeds are very limited. We were only able to release 100 (3) packs. That said, we will be continuing to work these genetics forward,  and we are really looking forward to bringing you more in the near future as we continue to perfect this great cultivar.

As always, Happy Growing!

Beth + Team Dirty Birdย
